Hona Ettingen was born on February 21, 1913 in Rezekne( according to the pre-1918 old (Julian) calendar style. March 6, 1913, according to the new (Gregorian) calendar style).
His father was Notka, son of Josel Ettingen, born in Kraslava.
His mother was Yenta( Enta), the daughter of  Khaim- Mendel Mikhelsohn( Michelsohn or Michelson). She was born in Rezekne in 1888. In the Rezekne 1897 census, there is no data about the family of Khaim- Mendel Mikhelsohn. In the Kraslava 1897 census, there is no data about the family of  Notka Ettingen.

In 1922, Yenta Ettingen ask for a passport for her and her children Hona and Feiga to emigrate to America, where she had relatives. On June 1922, the passport was ready. On the passport there was a visa for a trip from October 18, 1922 to January 18, 1923.

On May 17, 1923, she and her children were given a second passport with a visa for a trip to America to August 17, 1923.
In 1922- 1923, they lived in Riga, Jekavpils5 Jekabmiesta st, House 8, apt 11.
Eventually, Yenta left for USA along with Feiga, Hona and newborn Severasa. They have left Libau onboard of steamship Lituania on November 28, 1923. Two weeks later, on December 12, 1923 they arrived to New York. After a special inquiry they were allowed to land on January 18, 1924. Their intended destination in USA was Chicago, where Yenta’s brother-in-law D. Cohen lived on Irving Ave.. It is not known whether they made it all the way to Chicago or not. What is known is that no later than November 1925 Yenta with children has returned to Riga.

Hona Eettingen was born on Febriary 21, 1913 in Riga.

Nota Ettingen was killed in action in 1915 during WW1. He had at least one brother, Neukh( Noakh), son of Josel( Josif) Ettingen. He was born in Kraslava in 1876 and lived with his family in Riga until WW2. His son with family emigrated to Palestine in 1939.

Feiga Ettingen- Usdin

In 1910, Feiga, also Eva- Feiga was born to Nota and Yenta Ettingen in St Petersburg.

On November 19, 1933 Feiga Ettingen married to Kadish( Kadis), born on March 19, 1909 to Khaim Usdin in Vishki. I suppose, he was the Grandson of Kadish Usdin, born in 1842 in Vishki and Rokha, born  in 1857 to Hirsh.

From January 21 to June 1935, they lived on Ezusbaznitzas st, House 2( former N°: 18), Apt 4.
From June 7, 1935, they lived on Lāčplēša st, House 118, apt 49.

On January 1, 1936 Nota was born to Kadish and Feiga Usdin.
From May 20, 1939, they lived on Katoliu st, House 2, apt 42. On February 6, 1940, they were registered on Lāčplēša st, House 110, apt 2. According to the houses register they were registered there on July 9, 1940, then there is no info.

Yenta Ettingen's third marriage

Yenta Ettingen's second husband was Yankel, born in Kruspils to David Reff  in 1885.

Before her marriage with Yankel Reff, Yenta Ettingen had children:

* Abram Ettingen, born on November 26, 1920 in Riga. In the records, it is stated that he was the son of Mendel Etinger from Kraslava. Mendel Etinger was the second husband of Yenta, because the Passenger Manifest states her status as “Divorced”.

After a trial by a court decision of on April 23, 1924 Abram Ettingen was given the name of Abram Reff.

On April 15, 1941 Abram Reff was registered at Lāčplēša st,  House 110 according to the houses register.

The book of Eva Vater "Latvian Jews in fight against Nazism" contain information about Abram Yankelevich Reff. During the war he was in Red army. He foughtn the 125th Artillery Guard Rifle Regiment, 43th Guards Rifle Division and was killed on February 23, 1943 in Staraya Russa.
In the archive database of the RF Ministry of defence, there is an information about Abram Reff. He was drafted into the Red Army in the Kalinin district, Chuvash Autonomous Region, ASSR.

* Severasa( Seva) Ettingen, born on August 14, 1923 in Riga. She was adopted by Yankel Reff in November 1931.
Her husband was apparently David, the son of Simon Markushevich( Markuschewitsch), born on February 21, 1922 in Riga.

She had, at least a son, Hirsh Markushevich( Markuschewitsch), born on August 31, 1941 in Riga.

* A daughter, Sima Ettingen, born on November 26, 1925 in Riga. She died on June 24, 1927 in Riga

* A son, Khaim Reff, born on January 11, 1927 in Riga.

Yenta Ettingen married to Yankel Reff on December 9, 1930 in Riga.
According to the houses register the family of Yenta Ettingen lived at Ezubaznitsas( Jēzusbaznīcasst) st, House 2( former N°: 18), apt 5.

Hona Ettingen

On January 2, 1938 Hona Ettingen married to Golda, born to Khaim- Mendel Levitanus( Lewitanus) on March 2, 1918.

From May 18, Hona and Golda Ettingen lived in Riga, at Katolu st, House 2, apt 42( former adress: Ludzas st, House 4, apt 1).
On February 6, 1940 and until July 9, 1940, they were registered at Lāčplēša st, House 110, apt 2.

Golda Ettingen was killed in the holocaust.

The second wife of Hona Ettigen was Zinaida( Zina) Tkachenko, born in Ukraine in 1924.

 They have met as partisans sometime during the WW2. Hona didn’t like to recall the pre-war and war times. His Grandson, Oleg assumes that was because all his relatives were killed. May be that’s why he never officially married the Ukrainian lady, though they had four children. All four bear Tkachenko surname.
Hona died  in mid 1970, Zinaida in 1974 in Riga.
They had children:

* Lev Tkachenko  Lev Tkachenko was born in 1947 in Enakievo, Ukraine.

He was a fisherman, captain’s mate on large ocean trawling ships. Two marriages. Died in Riga. Survived by Oleg Tkachenko (b. 1969). Younger son from second marriage (Denis, 1978-2009) died in 2009.

* Elena Tkachenko Elena Tkachenko (Reprintseva) (1950-1989). Born in Riga. Two marriages. Died in Riga at age 39 due to cancer. Survived by Sergey (b. 1969), Slava (b.1978) and Yulia (b. circa 1982).


* Fanya Tkachenko  Fanya (aka Inna) Tkachenko (1951-circa 2005). Born in Riga. Multiple marriages. Died in Riga. Son Alimzhon (aka Alik) died circa 2007.

* Silva Tkachenko Silva Tkachenko (1953-1991). Born in Riga. Died at age 38 after a poor surgery. No offsprings.

The fate of Yankel and Yenta Reff and their siblings

The last known adress of Yankel and Yenta Reff was in Riga, Lāčplēša st, House 110, apt 2.
In the documents dated April 1940, it is stated, that the family of Yankel Reff had a very difficult life. Occasionnaly he worked as a photographer and made 90 lats per month. Their daughter Severasa( Seva) studied sewing, Abram in that time was in Irlava juvey. Their son Khaim attended school.

On June 22, 1941( corrected into July) Yankel Ref was registered as a drayer and divorced on Lāčplēša st, House 110. However, in the houses register at Maskavas st, House 63, he was stated as married.

From October 2, 1941( during the nazi occupation) Yenta Reff, born Mikhelsohn, Khaim Reff, Severasa Markushevich, born Reff and her son Hirsh Markushevich and Yankel Reff  were registered on Maskavas st, House 63, apt 18( the territory of the Riga ghetto during the nazi occupation)
Obviously Yenta, Yankel, Khaim, Severesa and her son Hirsh were killed in the first action of the November 29 to 30 night or second action, which took place in the night from December 7 and 8, 1941 when 25000 jews of the Riga ghetto were killed in the Rumbala forest.
